Crisis Preparedness Cycle

BRISBANE, QLD – As Queensland charges toward a renewable energy future, the infrastructure supporting it requires more than just technical engineering—it demands world-class risk management.

Queensland Hydro is proving that safety and reliability are at the core of their mission, recently completing a high-stakes crisis management exercise that reached the highest levels of leadership.

For the third consecutive year, the organisation has demonstrated a rigorous commitment to its preparedness cycle. This isn't just a periodic check-in; it is a strict, year-round process of document review, resourcing, and hands-on training followed by immediate implementation of lessons learned.

The latest exercise served as a live trial for a newly developed SharePoint-based Incident Management System. Designed to streamline communication, the system was put to the test across multiple geographic locations to ensure seamless coordination during a potential crisis.

Key highlights of the recent readiness push include:

  • Executive Leadership: In a rare show of "walking the talk," the CEO was directly involved for the entire duration of the exercise, highlighting that crisis capability is a priority from the boardroom to the field.

  • Multi-Location Coordination: Testing the ability of disparate teams to work as a single unit using digital tools.

  • Continuous Improvement: Following the "Plan-Do-Check-Act" cycle to ensure that the clean energy transition remains resilient against unforeseen risks.

Building large-scale pumped hydro is a complex undertaking with significant responsibilities. By maintaining a robust crisis management capability, Queensland Hydro is ensuring that as the state’s energy mix evolves, the safety of its people, projects, and the environment remains uncompromised.
